Open for business
As part of our research, we took a trip to Oxford Street in which we were ‘made up’ and ‘styled’ and while the women who assisted us were polite enough, they were clearly a bit phased, as indeed were we by their interpretations of what would ‘suit you’.
This led to a recollection by Verity of the thriving store she had known 20 years earlier in North Norfolk, ‘Roys of Wroxham-the world’s largest village store’. Revisiting this store 20 years later when all department stores are closing around us, we wanted to investigate and document this emporium of shops that is successfully meeting the needs of the local community that includes a population of retirees.
